Transferred to actual bf% measured by DEXA this means a deviation of up to 1.6% body fat at 20%.

Unfortunately i wasn't able to find the link again, i researched the same thing some time ago - modern scales are actually pretty close to the actual bf%* ( actual bf% as in determined by a DEXA Scan, which has it's own deviation) with a deviation of 4%-8% under optimal circumstances (24h fasting, like before a surgery). So you can only compare cycle week1 to next cycles week1. Women however need to watch their cycle - there are weeks where the body holds additional water, screwing with the scale reedings. Men can compare the readings from this fixed spot every week. Do you really care if the Caliper says you went from 25% to 20% or if the scale says you went from 26% to 21%? What really matters is the change of 5%.Īs for the scale the usual applies - take a fixed time to weigh yourself, before eating, before drinking, after using the toilet. However, if you take the same scale and bring some consistency into the weighing process, you will get a somewhat accurate bf% (accurate as close to your actual bf%), but you are able to draw conistent numbers to track changes and the tendency where it's going.

Different scale brands will tell you different bf%. I read some reviews saying the bf% reading are often all over the place on these scales A fasting scale reading however is more precise than the calipers (as the caliper formula uses age to adjust). Correctly used calipers beat an everyday scale reading. Is the caliper method the most accurate? more accurate than a scale? No, that would be the four compartment model, which utilizes both DEXA and hydrostatic weighing. I am glad, however, that I won't be spending $100 on a shitty BF% scale. Seems like I am back to just eyeballing it. But I just want to know exactly! Looks like I am out of luck, as I can't afford regular DEXA scans.

If I had to guess my body fat based on the comparison to a series of pictures with varying BF%, I'd say I am somewhere between 10 and 15%. But I am a scientist and thus have an affinity for data. Also, when I decide to cut, I don't want weight to be a goal, but rather BF%. I am currently doing a bulk, and care more about increasing my lifts while not vastly increasing BF%. The reason for this is that I don't really want to use weight as an indicator of health like I have before. UPDATE: Thanks for all your suggestions! Some have asked about my reason for wanting to measure body fat % instead of just tracking weight and lifts. Are any reliable? Is the caliper method the most accurate? Any info helps as I would like to be able to keep track of this accurately!
